Once you've narrowed down your mattress choice, have a look at everything else that makes up your 'nest' - the foundation, the pillow, the sheets, the mattress protector. How do you know when it's time to replace more than just the mattress?
Here's a few tips on what to check for:
Foundation - Has it lost it's support? Do a visual inspection, can you see the surface 'bowing'? Is the fabric on the side sagging? (If you can pinch the fabric, then it's sagging). Is it broken or torn? Does it squeak? If you answered yes to any of these questions, it's a good bet you need a new foundation for your mattress. You may want to take this opportunity to switch things up a bit and a platform base.
Pillow - How old is your pillow? If it's more than 3 years, it's time for a new one. Pillows will naturally lose support over time. Choosing a great pillow is just as important as choosing a great mattress. The right mattress with the wrong pillow is like wearing plaids with stripes, you can do it, but why would you want to?
Mattress Protector - It's the LAST thing people consider, but it's probably the MOST important! I know, I can see your eyes rolling right now, but a good mattress protector will extend the life of your mattress by providing protection against spills, perspiration and skin cells, all of which can wear down the foam and cause lasting odours. If you are buying a new mattress, spend a few extra dollars to protect your investment - it's money well spent.
Sheets - Visible signs of wear and tear (thinning, yellowing, fading) are the most obvious indicators your sheets may not be what they used to be. You'll start to notice a change in the feel of your sheets the longer you have them. When they no longer give you that 'good night' feeling, it's time to get new sheets.
In the end, buying a mattress is a great excuse for freshening up your bedroom and everything in it...have fun with it!
